Gay Pride and the God Delusion

Now you all know by now that I'm not a big fan of gay pride. I don't like walking through the streets of a city announcing that I'm gay while I wear something ridiculous. It's a day when we ask to be taken seriously and look like a really weird mob. And, it's a day when we ask people to treat us as equals and go out of way to look different.

I know not everyone agrees with me, but that's okay - we're all entitled to our opinions.

I would be more comfortable if we called it something like mardi gras, and we took to the streets inviting anyone who wanted to have fun (or wear a boa in public). Pride has a political connotation, and I'm not sure I like that. If we wanted to organise a real political protest then lets do that - let's demand seriously that we want something, seriously... like the 75 000 who recently marched in Washington as part of the National Equality March. That's good stuff... me running through the streets with hotpants telling people I'm gay... not so fruitful. Pride was important. Now we need to re-invent it.... C'mon South Africa... let's lead the way!

That all said, I did go to Zoo Lake afterwards and have a few drinks with the boys, and a few girls who looked like boys, and a few boys who looked like girls, and a few girls who used to be boys.... it was pretty festive. Over 15 000 gay people (and those that love them) in a park being festive. I loved that... and proof that our secret efforts to convert people to the evil ways of deviance are working. Next year we hope for 20 000, depends if we can get to first year university students before our enemies, the rugby teams, get to them first.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnyyywaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy...

On a totally different note... I told you all that I'm reading The God Delusion. I'm just over halfway and so far I am finding it totally stimulating. I have not made a decision about his theories, but I have to say that its a lot more rational than I anticipated.

I must admit that I am attracted to his ideas. A recent reader left a rather scathing response to one of my posts and it was one of the first times that I really got angry and wanted to respond with swearwords and insults. Because that's what I felt the reader's response deserved. He/she took a lot of what I said and changed the context and rebuttled with scripture to mere portions of scripture that I had used - not reading it in full context. The reader felt that he/she "could not allow" me to deceive myself any longer. And once again, I was told that Jesus was there for me freely, if only I would accept his grace.... and change.

Please, new readers, if you read my blog please go back to my initial story of how I did all you asked... I am not prepared to step back on the wheel.

And while the majority of Christians have been supportive - I've found that it is really those who are prepared to not see the Bible as fundamentalist book, written by the hand of God, and totally relevant to today. I have believed in the Bible most of my life, but like I do not believe that the communion afer"becomes" the body of Christ, I do not believe that the Bible is perfect and completely relevant to today. Examples like verses missing (Mark 15:28) because they were lost in translation show that there is room for error. The reality is that even amongst Christians we are divided in our views becasue we are divided in what we really believe in scripture. What is symbolic, what is real? What is based on the times (like being stoned to death for being rude to your parents) and what is not? All I know is that we don't all have it worked out. And those that do are probably desperately afraid of not being right so avoid the questions.

I could go on forever but I don't want to get into massive theological debate... that's not the point of my blog. It's about a regular guy trying to live his life as best he can. And I'm thinking that my entire worldview is in the process of being reshaped... maybe you want to add your thoughts to help me on my way...

just a comment I heard the other day that I thought of while reading this... just because it's biblical, doesn't mean it's Christ-like

I wanna wear a boa in public. :)

I lost God round the time of my divorce and to be honest I am not looking to find him..... not because my ex husband is gay (not for one second do I have a beef with God or my ex about that if I am honest), but because I didn't want the divorce. It's a hard one for me to comment on any subject biblical. Is like I lost my thought process, my opinions regarding.

"I do not believe that the Bible is perfect and completely relevant to today" - totally agree with you here. I think we have to acknowledge that the bible was written a REALLY long time ago and we have to read it with that in mind. I also think that too many people take little bits out of the bible and follow those bits religiously, while conveniently leaving out really important concepts - like the "love your neighbour as yourself" concept to name but one!

In his documentary 'Religulous', Bill Maher interviews a Vatican astronomer (yes there are such things!) about the question of scientific accuracy and the Bible.

He responded by saying something that I wish Christians around the world would all realize and accept: the Bible is not a scientific document. It cannot be, as it was written more than a millennium before modern science was even developed! You cannot therefore claim things to be true or force others to live in a certain way based on its contents, because it is in effect just as 'accurate' as Homer's The Iliad with all its sea monsters and sirens.

It's a matter of FAITH, and if you choose to believe, then it is personal.

I, for one, choose not to believe in pink unicorns in the sky.

The book 'The God Delusion' is written by Richard Dawkins, I believe. I haven't read the book as yet and would love to; however, I just wanted to point you in the direction of a fascinating lecture he gives on 'TED.com' on 'militant atheism'. You may find it very interesting viewing as a side-dish to your book.

Dawkins being a biologist and an avid Darwinist has some compelling points to make; admittedly he is completely unforgiving and unrelenting regarding religion.

My contention with Dawkins is his advocacy for 'militancy'; this to my mind implies enforcing one's ideology by way of violence.

Thanks for all the comments guys!

Celeste - I hear ya, but that's my point exactly... where do we draw lines, because we have to... there is so much I want to say on this *bites tongue*

Wenchy - you'd look fabulous with a boa daaaaaaahling... Aw, sorry to hear about the bruising... yeah, it's hard to believe in hope when we feel disappointed.

Gill - actually that love your neighbour thing is hugely interesting. Jesus was staunchly Jewish - and patriotic. When he says love your neighbour as you love yourself, he is ACTUALLY saying - love all Jews. That's the original translation.

Roux - yeah Dawkins says much the same... interesting

Trevor - I'll take a listen - he certainly doesn't say that in the book, in fact he says that's the most refreshing thing about atheism - it hasn't caused wars and retaliations like religion has...

Joanne - yep, lots of laughing... fly up to JHB next year... we'll make a day of it!

hmmm... i'm a complete virgin to this Delusion thing, but i do have one (intensely personal and by no means meant to be propaganda) recurring thought about the Book: i love the stories and the message i get reading what i choose to see as an ancient, elaborate love letter from God, as interpreted, rewritten, re-appropriated, adapted and translated by flawed hands.

what i don't get, is obsessively wringing out the dotted i's and crossed t's when you can be in a living relationship with the Inspiration.

risking losing the plot here: but i really do compare my spiritual life to my family life - and I'm not going to throw my dad to the inquisition about a billet-doux from "life before me".
talking is so much more enjoyable and enriching.

Clive darling, I love what absolutewillie just said. Love it. The concept of the bible being a love letter? Fabulous. I have to admit, though, to being a bit of a phillistine with these things, so I'll keep quiet on it. I love reading your take though xx

I also love the idea of the love-letter from God.. and i prefer to see the Bible as allowing God to read me, rather than me trying to interpret him in a away that suits me. Caio! Lisa.

Actually pretty much love everything absolutwillie said! Caio! L.

For a different side to the God delusion there is a book by keith ward called ' why there almost certainly is a God:doubting dawkins'. Is it a good idea to have both sides to the story before you make a decision? Its just an idea
